This gun was called the “Fountain Hills Gun” because it was designed and built on top of a natural fountain that served as a target practice field for local residents. The guns from this era are still being used today at the range. In 1911, ARPA member Fred Wesson developed what became known as the “Wesson Model 1911 Pistol” which is still considered by many to be one of the best pistols ever made. Fountain Hills was founded in 1893 by George Hanks and his family as a citrus orchard. The original mill was built on the current site of the courthouse in 1896. In 1907, Fountain Hills became an incorporated community and began to grow rapidly as a result of its location near Phoenix and Mesa. The fountain that still stands today in downtown Fountain Hills is one of the earliest examples of self-cleaning water fountains in North America. In 1949, most of what remains of downtown Fountain Hills were destroyed by a fire that burned for days after becoming involved with an argument between two groups of teenagers over drugs. By 1969, however, all but about 20% of downtown had been rebuilt following a $5 million dollar grant from the United States government under President John F Kennedy’s America Federalism program. Today, Fountain Hills remains one of the most ethnically diverse towns within miles of Phoenix and Mesa due to its large number (or lack thereof) Native American populations who live on or around nearby Apache Indian Reservation
Fountain Hills is a city in the Phoenix metropolitan area, and is one of the fastest-growing cities in Arizona. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census, up from 1,512 in 2000. It is adjacent to Scottsdale and Gilbert on the east and west sides, respectively. The city began as part of Surprise Valley when irrigated land around Phoenix was acquired by the United States government for irrigation purposes during World War II. Afterward, development proceeded largely by annexation of surrounding villages until Fountain Hills became an incorporated city in 1957. The name "Fountain Hills" refers to two natural springs that form a centerpiece of town - Apache Springs on the north side and Flowery Branch on the south side. In 1973, Mayor Lloyd Bentsen unveiled his master plan for growth which called for increased housing production through annexations of nearby communities; however, only Scottsdale annexed more than Fountain Hills did likewise over ensuing years. In 2006, despite objections from some who argued that it would contravene plans made under Mayor Phil Gordon, City Council approved annexing neighboring town of Dunlap with no opposition from residents or businesses. dunlap's incorporation into Fountain Hills occurred eight months later on November 6th 2007
