Florence, Arizona is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona. It was founded in 1907 by the two brothers Lorenzo and Enrico Florentini. The town name is derived from the Italian word "florence," meaning "place of flowers." Florence's history dates back to 1907 when the two brothers founded the city of Florence, Arizona on land they had acquired from José María del Carmen y Saldaña. In 1915, Florence became a part of Pima County. Today, Florence is a thriving community with a population of about 1,200 residents. The Florentini Brothers were natives of Italy who came to America in 1881. Lorenzo was born in Brescia, Lombardy; Enrico was born in Naples, Italy on October 25th, 1882. They first settled in Prescott before moving to Florence in 1907. At that time it was one of only three townships within Pima County and the only one outside of Tucson metropolitan area. The brothers developed Florence into a thriving city with over 100 businesses and an annual output of $10 million dollars! In 1915, they donated 101 acres (40 hectares) to become what is now downtown Florence. This land would later be designated as courthouse square and serve as the location for many civic events throughout its history including dances at Gadsden Hall and bullfights at Don Carlos Park! In 1965-1966 an ambitious project called "Avenue des Arts" was undertaken which aimed to improve communication between downtown Florence and Valley Center through construction of electric streetlights along Main Street between University Avenue and 5th Avenue SW., as well as new sidewalks on both sides of Main Street between University Avenue and 4th Avenue SW.. The project cost $350 thousand dollars but it eventually led to increased business activity along Main Street which helped keep downtown Florentine busy during evenings hours while Valley Center experienced significant daytime vacancy! It should be noted that while much has changed since 1907 when Lorenzo & Enrico Florentini founded their city - such as Downtown Florence becoming more vibrant with art galleries & nightlife - much remains consistent within this small community including its rich history which has been documented by various publications over the years!
The city of Florence, Arizona was founded in 1912 by the combination of two small towns - Florence and Cottonwood. The location was perfect for a new town because it had access to both the Colorado River and the Mexican border. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from downtown Florence to what is now the University District. The first store in Florence opened its doors on September 5th, 1912. By 1922, there were over 20 businesses in downtown Florence. In 1929, another store was built on Nuevo Mesa Boulevard. The building still stands today and is used as an office complex. That year also saw the opening of one of largest movie theaters in Phoenix when the Regal film theater was built on Pappas Avenue near First Street. Downtown Florence continued to grow throughout World War II as business picked up again after the war ended. In 1945, a grocery store was built on Wahlstrom Road which still stands today and is used as a local convenience store today. In 1957, another large structure was added to downtown Florence when developer Harry Waddell erected a three story shopping mall which continues to be used today by residents and businesses alike. At that time, there were over 300 businesses in Downtown Florence!
