In 1925 construction began on what would become the downtown core of Florence; this included the erection of the first downtown building: The Homer Laughlin Steel Works Building (now known as City Hall). This steel plant produced metal products such as cars and bridges for local use until it closed in 1976. Today, some of these structures still remain within the city limits - including City Hall itself! In 1970-71 an ambitious campaign to clean up downtown resulted in major renovation projects that improved pedestrian flow throughout much of the district; today there are more than 1 million people living or working Downtown! From 1985-1996 a new arts center,, also known as "The Factory", was constructed adjacent to Third Street/State Route 66; it continues to host art events both inside and outside its walls today! Finally, during 2006-2007 restoration work on various buildings within Pioneer Square completed making this district once again one with splendor!
