At that time, there were only about 25 residents living in Florence when it became an independent city on February 17th, 1932 under leadership from Mayor Eduardo Martinez de la Fuente y Valdez (1906-1972). The first program initiated by Mayor Martinez was called “Casa de las Mujeres” or Women's House which housed women refugees from Chihuahua who had been deported back east after being accused of prostitution or other crimes. In 1936-37, Florentine firefighters aided Mexican revolutionary Francisco Villa during his efforts against General Antonio Lopez Carranza at Phx Hills Resort Golf Course where Villa's forces lost 3/5ths their number while trying to gain entry into Scottsdale through an underground tunnel used by other Villistas formations seeking escape routes from El Paso Texas across central Arizona during this period known as "The GreatMexicanWar". As part of this effort local citizens contributed food and water buckets to help support these troops and also gathered firewood which they would later use against General Lopez Carranza's army marching up I-10 towards Tucson following their victory at Battle Creek Bridge on November 16th 1937 resulteding in more than 100 prisoners dead along with vast amounts property damage done to local ranchos including many homes that still stand today within walking distance or less miles away from downtownPhoenix! A plaque dedicated to these firefighter/revolutionaries stands adjacent to Lady Bird Johnson Airport entrance gate today
