In 2000, the City of Phoenix annexed part of Florentine Township which located east of town on State Route 901 made it an incorporated city with its own government and police department. By 2002, only 5 residents remained in Florence while all but one business closed down or converted into apartments. However, due to increasing population density within Pinal County as well as new development nearby such as Walmart and Edison Mall, Florence has seen recent growth with 2 new homes being built since 2006 alone!
On October 17, 1912, Florence was founded as a town in Whatcom County, Washington by J.B. Dyer and his wife Lillie. The town was named for the Italian city of Florence, Italy. On November 15, 1912, the United States government chartered the towns of Florence and Nome on Great Northern Railway land east of Douglas City in what is now Arizona Territory. The towns were built to house workers on the new railroad project. Florence's first mayor was Wm. Hanks and its first recorder was A.F. Pollard with Elisha Swayne as treasurer The first post office opened in Florence on December 12, 1912 In 1916, the United States military established Camp Verde west of Florence to train Apache Scouts In 1938–1939, during World War II, three airfields were constructed near Florence-Nome: RAF Anzio Beach (now Luke Air Force Base), RAF Santa Ana (now Davis-Monthan Air Force Base) and AF Morehead Army Air Field (later Fort Huachuca). In 1944–1945 Camp Verde was closed due to World War II hostilities
