Florence is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. In addition to Florence, Mohave County has three other villages: Hermosa Beach, Sahuarita and Yucca Valley. The first known permanent residents in this region were members of the Gila River Band of Chiricahua Apache Indians who called themselves "The People". During World War II many industries chose Florence for production because it had no counterpart anywhere else within range - including Peoria which had been chosen for its strategic location on Interstate 10 (the main highway through Tucson). On October 15th 1959 local resident Donny Larson became the first person from any community in Mohave County when he successfully ran for election as mayor against incumbent John Ferrell Jr.. One year later on November 1st 1960 Mayor Larson resigned due to health problems after serving two terms; his successor Donny Weeden took office effective January 1st 1961 under then-Governor Jay Begay Sr.. The City Council continued functioning until May 30th 1991 when it merged with neighboring Sahuarita into one municipality under newly elected Mayor Jerry Weeden..
