The founding of Florence wasn't without controversy; some Italians felt they had been taken advantage of by American officials when they were given land for settlement rather than being given a choice about whether to come to America or stay back in their homeland. However, over time many ItalianAmericans came to believe that their hard work and determination had helped contribute to Phoenix's growth as an ethnic community. In 1963 Florence became part of Phoenix when it was annexed from adjacent Scottsdale Township. At that time there were only 3,000 people living within its boundaries- today there are more than 15,000 residents who call Florence home! One notable aspect of this growth has been the increase in cultural diversity which has seen Florentine cuisine become an iconic part ofPhoenixan eating scene!

In 1912, Florence became the capital of Arizona Territory. In 1916, the state of Arizona was created from parts of both the old Mexican Tucson and Arizona Territories. Florence became the second city in Arizona after Phoenix.
