Flagstaff is a city in the U.S. state of Arizona, located on the eastern slopes of Flagstaff Mountain, about 25 miles (40 km) south-southwest of Phoenix and 60 miles (100 km) east of Tucson. After World War II construction increased when international travelers flocked to Arizona for its warm climate and opportunities for mineral exploration; today's economy depends largely on tourism which brings jobs into town from resorts near downtown and elsewhere around the mountain range that makes up much of Flagstaff's landscape. As recently as 1984 many residents still lived in small houses perched atopviaducts over canals leading down to villages deep inside Catalina County; today these dwellings are all gone save for a few remains scattered among abandoned buildings along Mohawk Road northeast of town. In recent years growth has slowed somewhat due to concerns about traffic congestion caused by new development near downtown while other parts of town continue experiencing rapid increases in population density which has made it difficult for pedestrians or cyclists to get around easily despite several major infrastructure projects being completed nearby such as Interstate 10/Utooth Rd., Apache Boulevard/McCarty Drive NE, State Route 83/McDonough Road NE and Pima Hills Drive SW1-SW2 within the past decade or so including another big project currently under way called Saguaro National Monument Expansion Project that will add 4500 acres (16 km2) adjacent to downtown – making Flagstaff one of only two large metropolitan areas in AZ without significant urban sprawl since 2000!
