The city was founded on February 14, 1867 by Anglo-American pioneers as Fort Apache and named for General George Armstrong Custer. It became a county seat in 1912. The economy of Flagstaff depends largely on agriculture and tourism. The University of Arizona operates a large campus in town.

Flagstaff, Arizona is a city in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 15,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix–Mesa–Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in Flagstaff were those who accompanied the Surveyor General when he surveyed the area in 1867. At that time, Flagstaff consisted of only a few scattered dwellings and was known as "the Deserted Village." In 1870, Tucson Homesteaders arrived and began developing land around what is now downtown Flagstaff. By 1880, there were over 150 residents living in Flagstaff proper and another 100 or so scattered throughout the surrounding villages. The city's growth continued unabated through most of the 19th century; however, it did experience some setbacks during this time period such as a lawsuit brought against City Hall by developers in 1892 which led to its incorporation as a city. In 1912-13, construction began on what would become Oneonta Dam; however due to World War I delays and other factors (such as an embargo on exports), it wasn't completed until 1922. This event helped contribute to later development within downtown Flagstaff including much of what exists today within Pioneer Park Cemetery Grounds outside of town limits. Additionally, during this time period many businesses moved from east side streets into central business district buildings on State Street near University Avenue where commercial space has been available ever since. During World War II many jobs were created for workers at nearby Mather Air Force Base and also local munitions plants; ultimately leading to increased population density within town limits while preserving much of original infrastructure including streetscapes and public squares which are still visible today despite various updates and alterations over time (e.g., additions/ deletions of numerous expressways). After Pearl Harbor ended hostilities in 1945 most residents returned home with few exceptions being drafted into military service or working on post-war reconstruction projects throughout Arizona In recent years there have been efforts underway by Mayor Greg Stanton and City Councilmembers Tom Donnelly and Don Metcalfe to revive downtown redevelopment along with increasing interest from private individuals interested in purchasing property adjacent to historic structures within town limits which would provide future amenity enhancements such as parks/landscapes etcetera . Today Flagstaff features one high school: Grant High School - located just east of Downtown off Congress Avenue - along with several small colleges/universities: Northern Arizona University - located southwest across Interstate 805 from downtown - ASU Tempe Campus - northwest off Interstate 805 next to Scottsdale Municipal Airport -Tempe Union Graduate School Of Business Administration- located northwest off State Route 16 just inside Town Limits
