Governor Pahrump then appointed Lieutenant Governor Don Hodges as interim governor until Babbitt could return from surgery again (Hodges served from January 1 through December 31, 1976). As oil production increased throughout Arizona during World War II many residents relocated to Flagstaff because military housing was available nearby or because jobs were open at Prescott Air Force Base which operated out of Bombardier Aircraft Factory just east of town (). After the war ended most people returned home but some stayed until recently due to new discoveries offshore including oil rigs being developed off neighboring Phoenix;; Rancho Mirage Offshore Petroleum Company has been developing offshore gas reserves since 1959 while several other companies are also active here such as Anadarko Petroleum Corporation On November 20th 1948 Navajo Nation President Manuel Lázaro asked United States president Harry Truman if he would recognize Native American sovereignty over lands inside New Mexico; following testimony from representatives from both parties Truman authorized public proclamation declaring December 14th 1948 as Navajo Nation Day(). This event marked an important step towards reconciliation between these groups which had been simmering since before white settlement began taking place hereabouts ().
