Flagstaff, Arizona is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, on the east side of the U.S.-Mexico border. The population was 29,531 at the 2010 census. Arizona's territorial capital was Yuma before it became Flagstaff and then Phoenix. The first white settler in what would become Flagstaff was James Waddell in 1867. By 1870s, there were over 100 Anglo-American families living here and businesses flourished thanks to trade with Mexico City as well as goods brought by wagon trains traveling through the Santa Cruz Mountains from California. In 1892, when Arizona Territory was created from portions of New Mexico and Chihuahua, Flagstaff became its capital. It remained so until 1912 when Phoenix took over that role due to increased population growth in central Arizona and outside of Tucson. Phoenix grew rapidly because of its location atop rich silver deposits discovered near Prescott during the late 1800s boom time period. Mining operations ceased around 1920 but left an enduring legacy on downtown Phoenix with buildings such as the State Capitol (1889), First National Bank Building (1912), Gold Medal Building (1925), American Eagle Tower (1978), and Fountain Square shopping center which still stands today! Flagstaff, Arizona is one of the most historic cities in the United States. The city was founded on February 14, 1912 by postal officials and citizens of Prescott as a post office called Flagstaff Station. The name of the city changed to Flagstaff on July 1, 1912, when the Territorial Legislature passed an act naming the new city after Mount Graham in Australia. On November 15, 1912, Mayor John W. White delivered a speech at a dedication ceremony for what would later become North High School. The first school in Flagstaff opened on January 11th 1913 with 10 students. In 1916, Flagstaff became part of Pima County and was granted a charter from the Mexican government giving it its own government and legislature. On December 12th 1917, during World War I, American troops were deployed to help guard Pima County against an attack by German forces and they burned down several businesses in town before withdrawing. This event is known as the Battle of Flagstaff and has been cited as one of the early examples of military occupation in America.
