Tuba City was rebuilt and became an important center for trade with Mexico until it was destroyed again by fire in 1892. A small community called Cottonwood developed around this time west of downtown Flagstaff near Cottonwood Lake also known as Cottonwood Hills today thanks to irrigation water diverted from nearby Lakes Mohave and Apache River). On January 14th, 1912 Flagstaff voters passed a resolution recognizing Spanish American War Veterans Memorial Day as a public holiday within our city limits; this proclamation became effective two days later on January 16th when Mayor Winton Hargrave issued an ordinance declaring that all businesses within our limits should observe this holiday by closing at 5pm on October 1st each year (the date specified for Spanish American War Veterans Memorial Day).
