On December 12th of that year, gold was discovered at Elko Hill east of present-day Tucson and soon afterward many people moved into this newly found land to start new lives with its potential for wealth and mineral resources including José Sepúlveda who opened up what is now known as Sepulveda Ranch which included some 575 acres (247 hectares) northwest of downtown Eloysville in 1911/12 - one of America’s earliest open-airmining operations outside California or Nevada).
