In 1907, when Eloy first emerged onto the map as a small farming community, it was only slightly larger than present-day downtown Phoenix. Its growth came from two primary sources: agriculture and ranching. By 1910 there were more than 200 farms in Eloy; many of these were operated by ranchers who exported hay, beef, applesauce and other products from the community to nearby towns such as Prescott and Window Rock. As irrigated agriculture increased throughout much of North America during the 1920s-30s (due to advances in irrigation technology), cattle ranchers began moving out of central Arizona into Eloy Township where they enjoyed good access to water systems that could support large herds of livestock year-round. This migration helped change how people lived in central Valley communities such as Phoenix; farmers now had easy access not only to agricultural land but also high quality water resources that allowed them to grow crops year-round while maintaining ample stockyards and pastures necessary for dairy production
