According to the 2010 census, 72% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino American; 14% as white; 1% as black or African American; 4% Asian; 2% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; and 0% with any other race. Eloy is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The name Eloy comes from Spanish meaning "the place where the sun sets." The first European to see the area now known as Eloy was Giovanni da Verona in 1540. He called it San Francisco de los Padres Católicos. In 1868, Colonel James A. Garfield sent an advance party of soldiers and settlers to explore this new land that would eventually become Pima County. They named the area after General José Mariano Salinas y Pavón who had led Mexico's successful war against United States forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The first post office opened in 1872 and was called La Hacienda de las Animas (“The Rancho of Bones”). The current post office building was built in 1923 and is also known as “The Old Fort” because it served as a fort during World War II when Eloy was used as an airfield for American forces flying into Baja California. In 1907, interest in developing this new land turned into development when a group of investors led by Captain George Bird Griggs purchased 640 acres east of present day Interstate 10 between Flake Road and Adobe Road from Manuel Nieto for $3 million dollars ($ ). This tract became known as Parkland Ranch with its original fences still extant today around mile marker mile 0 on I-10 neartoday's Walmart store lot (). However little did these early pioneers know that their dreams would come true soon enough; within just a few years they would be driving down FlakeRoad looking at their property again only to find another group has bought it all back! After some more negotiation and some more money being raised by griggs' investors they were finally able to build what we now know as “Eloy Gulch” which included what are now two elementary schools - Mesa Elementary School (1927) and Aguirre Intermediate School (1929). Mesa Elementary School currently houses grades Pre-K through 6th grade while Aguirre Intermediate School houses 7th through 12th grade along with several businesses including Burger King restaurant, Pizza Hut restaurant, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema & Brewpub., KFC outlet, tire store and many other smaller businesses such as revival Hardware Store,. There are plans currently underway by school district officials to convert Mesa Elementary into a middle school however until then it remains one of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema & Brewpub.'s most popular attractions! An important event which took place at this time occurred when President Franklin D. Roosevelt made his famous speech calling for Congressional action on behalf of Native Americans living on reservations across America (). Shortly thereafter Congressman John McCain traveled to Eloy to personally sign legislation authorizing funding for housing projects specific towards Navajo Indians () . This event helped jump start development efforts once again within Pima County for those who live near or within Indian Country (). Today there are over 2,000 dwellings situated throughout Eloy Township including both homes and condos (), making it one of the most developed areas surrounding Tucson!
In 1912, Eloy was the site of the first all-year fair in Arizona. The fair was held in response to the repeal of prohibition in that state.
