Eloy, Arizona is a small town in the Coconino County region of Arizona. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Eloy River. The first residents of what is now Eloy were blankets and other cloth toys that Native Americans traded with Spaniards and Mexicans during the 18th century for goods such as horses, cattle, sheep, and mules. In 1865 General Don Carlos Antonio Luna organized a cavalry regiment called "Los Pinos", which served in Mexico City until 1867 when they returned to Tucson. They brought along their artesanal clothing trade with them and named their new village after José María Morelos who had been governor of Veracruz at the time. In 1887 Eloy incorporated as a town under the name of Morelosville; however it reverted to its original name in 1912 when it became part of Coconino County. On November 1, 1907, Eloy's post office was established at 150 N First St., becoming one of only a few mail-order towns (the others being Flagstaff and Peoria) throughoutArizona that did not have its own post office building until this day. On January 15, 1912 an avalanche destroyed most of the Adobe Walls community northeast of present-day ElOY destroying more than 160 homes valued at over $1 million including many homes built by Northern Pacific Railroad contractor Johnnie Ladd;[2] this event also left behind numerous foundations and boulders which still stand today near Highway 93 south of town.[3] Since then much has changed about Eloy including several firefights between Apache Scouts from nearby Naco Valley against Yaqui Indians during World War II;[4][5][6] but some things stay constants like its annual 5K race & Music Fest which started in 1957 headlined by country legend Willie Nelson [7][8]; or even its beloved Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant which opened in 1967 next door to Church School #2!

In 1885, the towns of Eloy and Globe were merged to form a new city, Eloy. The name "Eloy" is Spanish for "invernal." The city was built on the west bank of the Gila River, about 25 miles north-northwest of Phoenix. It was named after General José María Eloy y Costilla, who had been a Mexican general during the American Civil War and later served as governor of New Mexico. The first settlers in Eloy were families from New Mexico. They arrived in stages between 1885 and 1888. Many people came overland via stagecoach from Albuquerque. A small mill mill operated near the town until 1895 when it was destroyed by a flood. The first school in Eloy was opened in 1892 by Mrs. Purdy and Mrs. Laddus under the direction of Drs. Wigglesworth and Higgins. In 1896, a school house became an agricultural hospital with three rooms for patients and four more rooms added later to accommodate children up to age 12 years old. In 1903, another school building became available when part of an homestead belonging to Judge Harry Henshaw bequeathed $10 for each student enrolled in grades one through twelve plus free lunch for students from Class I through Varsity High School alternate days during term weekdays (Monday through Friday).
