There is no doubt that the use of firearms has been a part of life in Eloy, Arizona for over a century. The Gadsden flag flown at the Eloy Rifle and Pistol Club dates back to 1892 and it can be said that this community was founded on arms and protection. The first gun owner in Eloy was W.J. Bassett, who owned land northeast of town in what is now the city of Phoenix. He opened a store called The Armory on First Street in 1892, which served as an early shooting range and storage facility for guns bought from local dealers. In 1903, Tucson rifleman Captain John Wesley Howell purchased property east of town and began building an armory on it known as the Howell Armory. This facility became one of the most important weapons stores in Arizona because it offered affordable ammunition, parts, equipment and training services to its customers. In 1916, Tucson rifleman George Armstrong sold his business to J S Rheinhart who formed Gun Shield Ammunition Company Ltd., one of the largest ammunition retailers in Arizona at that time. In 1924, Gun Shield merged with Brownells Ammo & Firearms Corporation to form Brownells-Gun Shield Incorporated (BGS). BG&I continued to grow throughout World War II by expanding into Canada where they operated two ammo manufacturing plants; one in Toronto and another near Montreal. After the war BG&I entered into a cooperative venture with American Cyanamid Corporations (AC) where they manufactured everything from pesticide products to artillery shells! During the 1970s BG&I played a significant role in developing new technology when they invented their own reloading dies used today by many firearms manufacturers including Colt®, Ruger®®, Savage™., Winchester™., Remington™., etc….BG&I passed away suddenly on December 6th 1990 after many years of leadership within our industry…..

Eloy, Arizona is located in the southeast corner of Arizona. The city was founded by Anglo-Mexican settlers in 1885 on land that had been part of the Hopi Nation. It became a town in 1903 and a county seat in 1912. Eloy has a population of about 60,000 people today, making it one of the most populous cities in Arizona. The city was first called Wellsville after its original founders, who were white men from New York City. In 1885, gold was discovered near Wellsville and development began immediately. By 1903, Eloy had become an important commercial center with mills and businesses producing goods such as flour, bacon, cheese, clothing, lumber and other goods. The county seat designation was given to Eloy because it then served as the largest town within Apache County and also housed all of Annexation Valley which included much of east-central Phoenix including Glendale and Phoenix Park. In 1912, during World War I effort to help with recruiting for the military by providing food and transportation to soldiers stationed throughout Arizona (the so-called “ furnished war”), Eloy became an important stop on the route between Phoenix and Tucson. The influx of troops helped create a new economy that grew fruits/veggies (a key export crop at this time), hay Rural Telephone Service (later known as Verizon Communications) opened up service here in 1916 which made phone calls free from anywhere in America for citizens living inside or outside ofArizona; this service continues to this day! Many famous people have lived or worked here including: Harry Truman (Ulysses S Grant’s Vice President during WWII), Steve Jobs(co-founder Apple Inc.), George W Bush ( 43rd President of the United States), Dick Cheney(former Director Central Intelligence Agency & current Vice Presidential candidate for Cheney), Tom Cruise( Actor) - currently filming “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”
Eloy was founded in 1912 by James A. Eloy and his family. The town is named after the Spanish word for "royal." In the early years, Eloy was a small community of about 100 people. In 1916, the townsite was enlarged when it was purchased from the Santa Fe Railway by local citizens. The population grew to over 500 people by 1930. By 1944, Eloy had reached its peak as a peaceful community with a population of 1,100 people. However, during World War II, Eloy became an important military base due to its location on the Mogollon Mountains and its access to water resources. As part of the war effort, armed guards were posted at all entrances to the town and large stockpiles of munitions were stored in warehouses near town center. After the war ended, many residents left for different reasons including joblessness and social unrest caused by changes in government policies that favored urban development over rural growth. Since 2000, there has been a gradual decrease in population due to factors such as departure of retirees and loss of jobs in nearby Phoenix; however, recent census data indicates that Eloy may still have between 1,000 and 2,000 residents living within its boundaries
