The history of firearms in Eloy, Arizona goes back to the early 1800s. The area was first inhabited by the Pima and Mohave peoples, who used spears and bows and arrows to hunt game. In the 1860s, a group of Apache Indians attacked a ranch near present-day Eloy. One man, John Wesley Powell, was killed in the attack. The ranch owner located a cave where he found two rifles that had been lost in the attack. He also found five hundred cartridges of various calibers. This discovery set off a arms race between Mexicans and Americans over who could get their hands on these new guns. By 1875, there were several gunsmiths located in Eloy working on remanufacturing old weapons for Mexican forces fighting against American settlers. In 1885, three men from Tucson bought an interest in the Rancho San Carlos Missionierra land east of present-day Eloy with the goal of founding a town there. They named their town after General Manuel Bonilla y Costilla’s victory at Cerro Gordo (October 15, 1885), which ended Spanish rule over Arizona Territory following its invasion by Ulysses S Grant during his Civil War campaign against Mexico. The men developed plans for building homes and businesses around what would eventually become downtown Eloy; however, they did not have any money to start any businesses until they raised $6,000 from friends and family members through bartering services during World War I. With this financial assistance arrived much-needed jobs for locals as well as new investment into local economies throughout World War II thanks to munitions production at nearby Phoenix Arsenal
