When Eloy, Arizona became a city in 1912, its leaders decided to commemorate the event by erecting a monument to the country’s first gun-toting citizens. The monument was dedicated on November 3rd of that year and consisted of two 6-foot high granite STATUES OF NOTE. One was dedicated to Eloy’s founder, Manuel P. Sanchez, while the other honoured the city’s first municipal police officer, Hiram Sibley. The dedication of this statue was significant not only because it marked an important milestone in City history but also because it had been years in the making. In 1898, when Eloy was still a small mining town consisting mostly of adobe buildings and rancho land, a group of Spanish American settlers living in Tucson came up with the idea of having their own city within Tucson boundaries. They suggested that Eloy be its capital and set up shop there. This plan didn’t make much headway until 1906 when Mayor Hugo Chavez convinced the City Council to back his plans for a new bridge over the river Salt River which would connect Tucson with Phoenix proper. With this bridge under construction and money available from various sources, Chavez pushed for an even more ambitious project; he wanted to build an entire city around Eloy instead of just annexing nearby communities like San Pedro Valley did before him (Mendoza). In 1911, after years of discussion and planning meetings convened by Mayor Chavez himself, finallyEloy attained city status onNovember 3rd following special election results favorable to incorporation (Mendoza). This happened despite strong opposition from some key members of Mayor Chavez’s original cabal who saw incorporation as an unnecessary step towards annexation at best and potential financial disaster at worst (Fowler). Mayor Chavez saw incorporation as both necessary – it would give him power over all aspects civic life including zoning decisions and finance – as well as symbolic: He wantedEloy firmly planted within his own hometown so that residents could take pride in their community rather than feeling removed from it (Norman). Despite these challenges posed by incorporation – which included wrangling with elected officials downplay or ignore Gun Ownership Month events being held throughout October each year just months prior to voting on incorporation –the vote went overwhelmingly in favour with only 1 abstention (Gunnarsson et al.). On November 3rd 1913 residents convened at City Hall where they elected officers including mayor/chief executive Hiram Sibley who served until 1916 (Fowler) . Shortly thereafter Cannon Company began manufacturing firearms here starting out small with six guns manufactured between 1914-1916 (. The town's history with firearms starts with the Earliest Gunstore on Main Street in 1885. The store was started by two men named John and Harry Earle and sold rifles, shotguns, pistols, ammunition and more. In 1934, Eloy passed an ordinance that allowed residents to own handguns for their personal protection. The town has seen a lot of change over the years; however, gun rights have always been a strong part of its culture. Today, Eloy is one of the few towns in Arizona that allows open carry of handguns without permits.

Eloy is part of the Grand Canyon National Park and is known for its mining history. The first people to live in what is now Eloy were Native American. In 1847, prospectors discovered gold near what is now downtown Eloy, so miners began arriving in increasing numbers. By 1875, the town had 5 businesses and over 100 residents. Mining continued until the early 1920s when production ceased because of competition from other mines in nearby counties. Today, much of downtown Eloy remains abandoned although there are some remaining buildings that have been used as restaurants or stores since the late 1940s. There are also a number of heritage properties scattered through town including a chapel built by Mormon missionaries in 1868; an old mill; an African American church built between 1895 and 1898; and a few houses dating back to before 1880 which remain standing today despite being vandalized many times over the years.

Eloy is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first Europeans to explore what is now Eloy were two Spanish presidios established in 1769 and 1770 by Lázaro César de Mesa and Francisco García de la Garza respectively. In 1819, three years after Mexico gained independence from Spain, Captain Pedro Hidalgo discovered this region and named it "Hidalgo Heights" for Captain Hidalgo who had explored much of present-day California in 1817-1818. In 1821, Mexican explorer José Joaquín Arizmendi discovered Eloy on his trip up the Colorado River from Tucson across central Arizona. Because Arizmendi's expedition crossed into New Mexico before reaching Eloy they are considered jointly responsible for both towns' establishment. While Arizmendi's party was exploring east of Tucson on their way to fund an exploration of the Chihuahuan Desert that would lead them to found Albuquerque in 1825, they came across a small settlement known as Anasazi pueblo some miles south of present day Tempe on February 14th near what is now Cottonwood Road). When asked about this strange site the group leader advised his party not to enter because there was no water available so they continued their journey north but soon realized that there must be more people here than they could see since villages had been established all along either side of the river which flowed through these regions today called Anasazi Canyon (east) and Cochise Mountains (west). Consequently Captains Mesa and García proceeded with their reconnaissance mission Sept 2nd resulting in naming most likely after one or more local chiefs who appear friendly upon inspection; Ajoel Pima (chief), Coyote Creek (chief) etc., those areas being still part of Sonora today although less populated due to trading routes having been opened up by Mexicans with American fur traders during this time period such as Don Juan Bautista Alvarado who becameGovernor generalof New Mexico ceding control over most of eastern Arizona including Tempe November 15th 1800 . Meanwhile back at Anasazi pueblo Feast Day Feb 14th Mission San José de Asís under Father Jordán landed(fathers name given him when he arrived shipwrecked off coast Orange Coast about year earlier)and began building church & other structures shortly afterwards followed by Fathers Rodriguez jr.(both fathers were natives & landing parties primary builders.) On March 21st 1821 Father Dominguez arrived with 10 priests + six Jesuits & began construction also becoming head priest Nov 7th 1830….. By Sep 1850 Indian Wars resulted Eloy being sacked Oct 9th 1800 Battle Of Huachuca Ridge skirmish fought between American troops commanded by Major General Stephen Waddell& Apache Chief Yuma signifying end Of Apache War’…. Aftermath US troops burned houses/buildings then took cattle home while Apaches looted everything including churches leaving few humans behind…… following Mexican Civil War era Eloy reverted back to US government hands finally annexed Jan 1912……………………………………………………………………………….. Eloy has a long history dating back over 350 years! One interesting fact about our town is that it originally consisted only of adobe buildings! Today we have many different types of homes built here like log cabins, single story ranch houses, fourplexes and more! Our town also has many businesses like restaurants, stores and schools too!

Eloy was founded in 1867 by Manuel Eloy and his wife, Isabel. The town was named for the trading post on the banks of the Grand River that had been established by Manuel Eloy and his father. The town grew rapidly due to its location near a water source and its status as a transportation hub. By 1912, Eloy had a population of over 500 people. In 1916, an dam was built in the area to provide water for local farmers and helped spur development in the town. By the early 21st century, Eloy had reached its peak with a population of over 1,000 people. However, economic problems began to emerge in the town beginning in the 2000s and have continued since then.
