Eloy is a small town in Arizona, located about 25 miles east of Phoenix. The post office at Eloy was established in 1907 and has been in operation ever since. It is the only incorporated community in Pinal County. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Eloy were Mexican citizens who considered the area to be too hot for farming and decided to locate elsewhere. In 1881, an Anglo man named George Stephenson bought land near present-day Eloy and began building a rancho. He arrived with four men, including his brother-in-law, John Wickenheiser, who had also come from England on a visit. The Stephenson Rancho became known as the Stephens Rancho after George's brother-in-law sold him the land. In 1906, when Pinal County was organized, Eloy applied for its own post office but it was not granted until 1912 because of a dispute between Phoenix and Tucson over how much water each city should get from the Gila River watershed. The new post office operated until 1951 before being moved to its current location adjacent to the old schoolhouse which served as its first building. The following year saw another important event when World War I began and local citizen Harry Stenson volunteered to serve in Europe as an infantryman with American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). After returning home he joined up with AEF again and fought at Ypres (1914) then Verdun (1916). He received two Silver Stars for bravery during these engagements; one for leading his unit into action under heavy fire while held up by German sharpshooters; the other for rushing forward through enemy lines carrying ammunition under fire while exposed himself to great danger. For his service during World War I, Harry Stenson was inducted into the United States Army National Guard on November 15, 1918 at Fort Worth’s Hotel Alamosa where he met President Warren G Harding personally.. He later served as governor of Arizona from 1923 – 1927 and as senator from Arizona from 1927 – 1933; he died in 1947 after serving three terms consecutively as Senator of Arizona
Eloy was founded in 1912 by Manuel Martinez and his wife, Ana. It is one of the oldest towns in Arizona. The population of Eloy grew to over 1,500 during the 1920s and 1930s, thanks to the arrival of agriculturalists and miners who worked in the nearby mines. The first school in Eloy opened in 1914. The town's first mayor was Dona Nieves Martinez. In 1916, a local bank opened up with $5,000 from donations from citizens. In 1925, a movie theater was built and named for Mayor Martinez. In 1948, Eloy became an incorporated city when it joined the state of Arizona. With its own police department and fire departments, Eloy grew rapidly as a center for commerce and industry. In 1984, a new expressway called "The Loop" was completed through town; this added much-needed transportation access to Eloy while also increasing business opportunities for locals. By 2009, however, economic conditions had deteriorated enough that City Council decided to file for bankruptcy protection; subsequently becoming one of the most recent incorporation failures in Arizona history. However, due to efforts by community members and civic organizations such as Blue Ribbon Cities USA (www.bricolocalismususa.org), Eloy has since bounced back somewhat since its bankruptcy filing – including experiencing significant growth within its limits since joining the city government system again in 2013).
