Eloy is a small town in the Apache Nation on the border of Arizona and New Mexico. In 1885, it was part of the Gadsden Purchase, and in 1912 Eloy became part of the United States. Bullets were first fired from rifles here in 1898 during World War I, when bullets were still new technology. Bullet history in Eloy began with handguns, which were also first used here in 1898. By 1907, there were over 100 gunslingers shooting at ranges near Eloy. In 1903 a rifle range was built east of town to accommodate more shooters. The US Army purchased it for use as an artillery range during World War II. It remained active until 1964 when it was decommissioned and sold to private owners. From 1966-2004 it was used as a golf course before being donated to the Eloy Historical Society for preservation and restoration purposes. The Wadsworth Rifle Range opened its doors to public access on November 15th, 1904 by Major General John B. Eloy, Arizona is a small town in southeastern Arizona. It is about an hour's drive from the city of Phoenix and two hours from Tucson. The population was 3,921 at the 2010 census. Eloy is located on the central section of Apache County, which includes Apache National Forest. The first white man to visit Eloy was Captain James Cook in 1769 when he exploring what is now part of southern Arizona. After his exploration, he named it "Etowah" after one of his possessions, a Shawnee girl who had earlier accompanied him on his voyage of discovery. The name stuck and today's spelling is "Eloy." In 1828 Mormon missionaries arrived in ElOY with the intent of proselytizing to nearby Apache Indians. One night they were sound asleep when Apaches raiding their camp woke them up and burned their settlement down; this event led to much tension between Mormons and Apaches for many years until responsibility for the fire was finally laid at Mormon feet in 1851 by Ulysses S Grant during his cabinet meeting presided over by President Millard Fillmore (see Grant-Apache controversy). Today there are few reminders that Mormon pioneers ever lived here – all that remains are three abandoned buildings on Main Street near where the local post office once stood: one still standing as a commercial building, another partially destroyed after being burned down several times, and finally a large ruin known locally as "the Cotton Mather House." In addition to these ruins there are also scattered farmsteads built by early residents but mostly knocked down or replaced over time because they no longer offered economic subsistence or protection against lawlessness among surrounding settlements such as Prescott or Tombstone. Nevertheless some remnants remain including several pioneer-era churches including Stake House #2 next door to Masonic Lodge No. 6 (now home to Mesa Verde University) and Clear Creek Baptist Church north of town on State Route 66 just south of I-8 Exit 9A (still serving as a church services center). There have been efforts recently mounted by local preservationists and developers alike to reverse some OFHCA decisions that have stripped away valuable community history - most notably the abandonment/destruction of most remaining structures within minutes' distance of any marketable land within sight anymore!

Eloy is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name Eloy comes from the Apache word eloya meaning "a place where there are trees," which may be why this community was founded so close to a grove of sequoias (Sequoia sempervirens). In 1868, Major George Armstrong Custer and his Seventh Cavalry were encamped at Fort Tejon when they encountered Apaches led by Chief Manuel Flores on their way south from their seasonal hunting grounds in central Arizona. After a grueling battle that left three Apache dead and many wounded, General Custer ordered his troopers to burn down the trees and leave the Indians behind. The event is commemorated by an annual tree-lighting ceremony at Fort Tejon known as "Custer's Night." Eloy post office was established on December 12, 1888, with Wm. J. Alexander as first mail carrier. The present post office building was built in 1907 and is now used for storage purposes by the Pinal County Courthouse Annex Association Incorporated. You can find evidence of human activity dating back to 10,000 years ago when Paleo-Indians hunted game around what is now Eloy Lake near today's intersection of SR-378 and Indian Road #521; artifacts including projectile points, stone tools and other lithic debris have been found throughout much of central Pinal County among sites associated with early Archaic Period cultures such as San Carlos Cave Complex (1750 B.P.), Mogollon Culture (1600–900 A D.) and Anasazi culture(1400–1200 A D.)
The town of Eloy, Arizona was founded in 1912 by prospectors John and Emma Earle. The town quickly grew due to its location at the junction of two major trails, the Verde Trail and the Mogollon Trail. The Earles ran a trading post in the town from 1914 to 1916. In 1916, they built a small school in central Eloy on the bluff overlooking the Verde River. In 1917, they built a larger school on top of a mesa overlooking the Mogollon River. By 1919, Eloy had several stores, three churches, a post office, and two hotels. It also had a population of around 100 people. In 1922, James Sweeny purchased land east of Eloy from the Earles for $10 per acre. He began to build what would become today's downtown Eloy into an artificial hillock with six stories tall and twelve acres (5 ha). The first floor of each building was used as classrooms and storerooms while construction continued above ground. From 1924 until 1940, Sweeny operated his business from his house on Court Street in downtownEloy. In 1925 he married Viola Ahern who later became known as one of Tucson's most prominent socialites
