During World War II, El Mirage served as an aircraft manufacturing center for the USAAF due to its location on the main supply route from Tucson to Los Angeles through Phoenix International Airport (PIA). This production included Lockheed Aircraft Company's P-38 Lightning fighter planes and Boeing 707 passenger planes as well as other military vehicles such as tanks and jeeps. Some residents also worked at PIA during the war years; many locals are still involved with airport management today. City growth continued into the postwar years with increasing commuting options: EL MARIQUEZ Boulevard Corridor opened up east of town providing arterial freeway access whileExpressway construction improved traffic flow throughout town The City Council approved annexation by Phoenix on November 5th 1956 making El Mirage one of Phoenix' "city blocks." El Mirage, Arizona is a small town in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is located on the banks of the Gila River, about 25 miles south of Phoenix and 83 miles north of Tucson. The population was 11,812 as of 2010. The first settlers in what would become El Mirage were Arapaho people who arrived in 1847. They built an adobe Fort Wagon Wheel on the edge of what is now irrigated land east of present-day downtown El Mirage. A post office called Red Castle was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1861, Territory Canon James Hales incorporated a new city called Prescott with a population of 20 residents; but due to disagreements between Prescott officials over water rights within the newly created territory, Prescott dissolved two years later without any change to its boundaries. In 1872, Major General George Armstrong Custer led an exploring party into Apache County while stationed at Camp McIntosh west of present-day Glendale; during their ride they discovered an oasis known as Tomahawk Lake which they named after their horse Tomahawk (the name may have been derived from Turkish word tamer).
