By 1912, there were also settlements on both sides of the international border at Cottonwood and White Sands Lake. In 1916, when World War I began, America entered into what became known as World War II with declarations by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that the country would be engaged in war until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. A week later on December 10th 1941 Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor killing over 2 million people including many American citizens and military personnel. More than 120 miles (190 km) south of El Mirage lay Marana Field where U2 pilot Chuck Yeager became world-famous for his first flight above Earth while flying over Tucson airport on July 20th 1947; two weeks later he flew his own airplane to Catalina Island near Tucson to land on it after completing a transatlantic crossing from England
