El Mirage, Arizona is a small town in the middle of nowhere, but it has something that larger towns do not: an El Mirage Museum. This museum is dedicated to scopes and optics in general and features exhibits on rifles, shotguns, telescopes, microscopes, and other optical equipment from the 18th century to the present day. The first scopes were created during the late 18th century. They were called “telescopic instruments” because they used a telescope to see things far away. At first these instruments were made for use by astronomers and scientists. However, as technology improved over time, people began to use Telescopic Instruments for recreational purposes as well. The first telescopic instrument used in El Mirage was a rifle Scope built by Captain Auld in 1892. During World War II many troops stationed here took advantage of the local optics resources to help with their war efforts. One of these soldiers was Major General George Custer who utilized a number of telescopes at his ranch in Morongo Valley while fighting against the Japanese forces. In 1948 El Mirage became part of the United States when it was added to Arizona Territory. As part of this new status quo many Scoped Instrument Museum opened up around the country thanks to donations from people like General Custer and others who had used or seen scopes during their time hereabouts. On July 15, 1990, USAir Flight 514 crashed into mountains near El Mirage after takeoff from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport; all five people on board died as a result. The crash remains one of aviation history's most catastrophic accidents.
