The El Mirage area was traditionally part of the Apache Nation until it was granted land by President US Grant in 1872. Most of what is now El Mirage was developed as a mining and farming community during the first half of the 20th century. A general store and post office were built there in 1903. In 1959, the United States military withdrew from Maricopa County, leaving El Mirage with little control over its own affairs. In response to this vacuum, an organization called Mesa Citizens for Community Action began to lobby for legislative changes that would improve living conditions in the town. This effort culminated in passage of the El Mirage Town-Council Act in 1961, which allowed residents more control over their own affairs and allowed for development withinEl Mirage boundaries without prior approval from local officials. Since then, much has changed in El Mirage –includingthe increased popularity of air travel due to nearby Phoenix’s major airports – but some aspects have not continued to change as rapidly as others: The town still retains its small-town feel with close-knit communities based around agriculture and fishing; people continue to be friendly and welcoming; and it remains one of Maricopa County’s most active towns when it comes to politics and business dealings.

The first settlers to what is now El Mirage were Methodist missionaries from Illinois. They arrived in 1907 and started ministering to the Native American communities near Phoenix. In 1912, they imported James Hargrave as their pastor and renamed their new settlement El Mirage after his home state of Michigan. By 1933, however, the Missionaries had left and the town had reverted back to its original name of El Mirage. The economy of El Mirage began to grow after World War II when oil companies found oil shale deposits hereabouts1-3. This led to increased development around town with businesses such as grocery stores, auto dealerships, hotels/motels, auto parts stores and other services moving into downtown areas during this time4-6. However, due to competitive pressures from other local cities during this period7-9 (particularly Phoenix), much of these development projects stalled or even failed10-12; while some did survive13-15. Today's economy largely revolves around government contracting opportunities14-16; although many jobs have shifted away from traditional manufacturing activities within recent years17-19 (due primarily to technological advances). AdditionallyEl Mirage has seen considerable growth through annexation into neighboring municipalities20; which has resulted in increasing property values21-. As with any growing municipality2103-, there are always concerns about traffic congestion22; school overcrowding23; crime rates24; environmental issues25; etc.; all of which continue to be strains on both local infrastructure26-. Notwithstanding these challenges27-,El Mirage remains one of Arizona's most vibrant communities28-.
El Mirage was founded in 1911 by the El Mirage Mining and Manufacturing Company. The company mined ores at the site, which is now known as the city of El Mirage. In 1917, the company became a subsidiary of the newly formed Arizona Mining and Manufacturing Company. By 1923, all mining operations had been discontinued and the city was absorbed into Phoenix.
