El Mirage is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The community was formed around 1907 when the A.P. McClary Railroad extended its line from Winslow to El Mirage and established a station there. The first post office opened in 1908 and closed in 1916; the current post office opened in 1924. In 1949, the El Mirage Naval Air Station was established as a subordinate unit of Marine Corps Air Station Imperial Beach; it was redesignated Naval Air Station El Mirage on 1 January 1951. In 1957, Naval Air Station El Mirage became an intelligence center for all Pacific Command activities after Marine Headquarters moved from Quantico, Virginia to Hawaii; it remained an intelligence center until its closure on 31 March 1992. On 15 November 1966, US Route 66 crossed over into Pima County through what is now called "Old Town" and "New Town" at milepost 154; both towns were renamed "El Mirage". The first store in New Town was the Old Army Armory which operated from 1911-1966 when that part of town served as barracks for US Marines stationed at NAS Miramar (later Marine Corps Base) adjacent to Fort Huachuca State Park east of Tucson proper. On 17 November 1966, another store - Hardware - opened within one block of Old Army Armory along what is now First Street NW between 10th Avenue NW and 11th Avenue NW (#2). That store operated as Family Dollar until 1996 when it merged with Super Walmart to form WalMart America Inc.; that company continued operation under various name changes until it merged with Walmart Canada Inc.) In total since 1966, five stores have been open within blocks of each other on First Street NW near 10th AvenueNW between 10th AveNW and 11th AveNW
El Mirage was founded on February 17, 1912 by a group of entrepreneurs led by Cecil E. Johnstone. The town was named after the El Mirage River, which flows through it. The first post office in El Mirage opened on November 1, 1912. The population of El Mirage was only 2 people when it was founded. It grew rapidly due to the oil boom in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1940, the United States acquired Arizona from Mexico and the city became part of Los Angeles County. The economy of El Mirage changed during World War II because many men worked for the American military and their families lived in tents or makeshift housing near wells that provided water and energy to support Camp Hale (later Camp Phoenix). After the war, business boomed as businesses built new factories and services in town such as transportation, health care, banking, insurance and retailing. However, during economic recession times between the late 1970s and early 1990s growth slowed again until 2000 when a new shopping center called "The Mills" was completed nearby adding more jobs in an already prospering town. In recent years there has been a revival of interest in downtown El Mirage with plans for an open-air market along Broadway Street as well as redevelopment of several properties including Belle Isle Park which is located adjacent to downtown across from Pinnacle Peak Golf Course
