The first European settlers in El Mirage were prospectors who traveled through the area in 1875. They named their settlement after a salt dome near Interstate 10 in Prescott, Arizona. In 1907, El Mirage was incorporated as a town under state law. In 1969, El Mirage became an unincorporated communities within Apache Junction Unified School District. In 1984, it became an independent city when it passed an ordinance adopting its own government structure and Mayoralty system. El Mirage has been called "theGateway to the Rockies". A number of celebrities have visited or lived there including Warren Zevon, Tom Petty and John Lennon during their early years as rock stars. There are now several golf courses located within walking distance of the community including Pinehurst Resort & Spa and Scottsdale Municipal Golf Course which are home to two Pro tours each year (PGA Tour and LPGA Tour). The urban center also features a variety of businesses such as restaurants and bars along with health-related services

Colonel George A. Smith of the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1912, an armistice between World War I and World War II ended fighting in Arizona; as a result, many military veterans decided to move to this scattered area west of Phoenix. Eventually, development took hold in the El Mirage area as businesses attracted workers from eastern Phoenix and Tucson. By 1960, there were over 200 businesses operating hereabouts including banks, garment stores, real estate companies and automobile dealerships. When Interstate 10 was completed through central Phoenix in 1965 and began carrying traffic southward along its route past El Mirage Boulevard into Tucson proper, business owners lobbied hard for changes that would allow them to open up their properties on I-10's southern side for passenger use only. Ultimately these requests were granted but with some restrictions placed on such development: no buildings taller than five stories must be erected or new streets built leading thereto; access to any water resources whatsoever must be denied; parking areas must be limited to two stories deep with at least one story of surface space per instance (this last provision being waived for restaurants). Today much of what once made up El Mirage Boulevard is now part of State Route 82 while still other sections are used by drivers travelling east/west on I-10 (the former alignment of US 60 until recently) or motorists travelling north/south on SR 827 which leads into Pima County just east of town limits. All told though original commercial street names remain dominant: Kingfisher Avenue runs northeast from SR 82 within town limits towards Scottsdale whileoriginally US 60 ran southwest from SR 82 paralleling Highway 87 (now Loop 1604) before turning northwest onto I-10 just outside town limits before rejoining SR 82 again immediately outside town boundaries
El Mirage was founded in 1912, when the Arizona territory was split between Mexico and the United States. It became a U.S. city in 1924 after it was annexed by Phoenix. The city's population reached 350,000 by 1940, but only 100,000 people lived there by 1970.
