El Mirage, Arizona is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first habitation in what is now El Mirage was a small Apache settlement near present-day Yuma on November 1, 1859 by three men: George Horseshoe and his two brothers, John and Charles Horseshoe; Manuel Carrillo; and José Chaves. These were among the original settlers of the area which later became Pima County. The town's nameakes were derived from two Indian words meaning "mirror" or "glass." The first post office in El Mirage was established on October 25, 1912. At that time it was known as Saguaro Lake Territory Post Office. On January 15, 1916, it changed its name to El Mirage after incorporation into Pima County by an act of the Cattlemen's Association of America as a result of the Wickersham-Boyd Act (1915). On February 14th 1907 – one day after Muddy Waters first recorded his blues song "El Paso" here – Cotton Fields Casino opened with $1 per visit for adults and $0.50 for children under 12 years old! That's right – free entertainment for all! In 1933–1964 El Mirage was also home to Joe Bonamassa’s final live show before he went off to start his own band called “The Band” in Memphis Tennessee

The area now known as El Mirage was first inhabited by the Pima people. The Spanish arrived in the 16th century and began to explore this area. They named this area San Marcos because of the large spring that lay here. In 1836, a survey was done of this area and it was determined that land could be sold for $2 per acre. This led to the founding of the town of El Mirage by some individuals from Tucson. The town quickly grew into a small city with over 100 residents in 1939. It experienced significant growth during World War II as military bases were established here including Sun Devil Air Force Base and Fort Bliss Army Ammunition Plant. After the war,El Mirage experienced rapid growth due to its status as a commercial center for Arizona and Southern California. During the 1970s, El Mirage underwent a revitalization process which included new development, increased traffic, and an increase in population density which has continued to occur throughout recent decades.
