In the early 1960s, El Mirage became an annex of Las Vegas after it was added to the city's boundaries. The town experienced rapid growth during the 1960s and 1970s due to tourism and other businesses that sprang up in response to the new city. By the end of the 1990s, however, El Mirage had lost much of its population and economic significance.

In 1970, construction began on another important project; El Mirage Racetrack which would become home to both Championshipsbred horses and track athletes from all over North America One of the most significant aspects of El Mirage's history has been its relationship with Mesa College which has resided here since 1907 providing education opportunities for students from all over town . Today Mesa offers undergraduate degree programs in arts & humanities, business administration/marketing, engineering/industrial engineering, law enforcement/safety studies, health sciences/medical assistant exams & licensure examinations as well as graduate degrees such as dentistry/dentist exams & licensure examination along with continuing education opportunities through summer institutes offered every few years
