The company began producing their own variants of the gun pivot until World War I when they switched to using an armature instead. During World War II, gun swivels were again manufacturers' specialties because of their importance in anti-aircraft warfare. As enemy aircraft increased in number, so too did the need for better guns capable of avoiding friendly fire. El Mirage, Arizona is a city located in northern Arizona on the banks of the Gila River. The population was 24,397 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and became a city in 1912. The name El Mirage may be derived from two words: el (a hole) and mirage (aillusion). According to one account, settlers named their town after looking out a large “mirage” they saw near their camp while exploring the region. By 1923, when it had a population of just over 10 people, residents renamed it after Nevada Senator James Wickersham. The original growth of El Mirage was due to its location on Route 66 which attracted thousands of tourists during its heyday in the early 1960s. Today, El Mirage remains an important cultural and tourist center for central Phoenix with numerous businesses located along Main Street including such well-known tourist destinations as Yuma National Wildlife Refuge and Scottsdale Fashion Square.

El Mirage is an unincorporated community located in Apache County, Arizona. The community has a post office with ZIP code 86301. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. El Mirage was founded on July 14, 1912 by J.H. "Tom" Brownell and A.F. "Al" Schumacher as a result of the construction of the railroad through Apache County from Phoenix to Tucson.[1] The townspeople built their first school in 1913 and organized their first police department in 1916. In 1924, they constructed their own water system and light company which still operates today as part of the City of El Mirage Utility District #2.[2] The town's economy shifted from agriculture to services after the completion of Interstate 10 in 1957;[3] however, some manufacturing still occurs within the boundaries of El Mirage such as printing and vacuum tube fabrication operations done by Hewlett-Packard Co.,[4] until about 2000 when those activities were moved outside city limits for economic reasons due to competition from nearby Scottsdale.[5][6][7][8] In recent years many people have left El Mirage because of its high cost of living or lack thereof compared to other places in Phoenix or Tucson; nevertheless there are still a number of businesses remaining that continue to generate jobs for local residents: banks ( Wells Fargo & Trust Company), health care providers ( Kaiser Permanente), real estate firms ( Ivanhoe Realty Trust ), hotel/motel operators ( Holiday Inn Express & Travelers Inn ),[9][10][11][12] along with several small businesses doing specialized tasks such as agricultural production or repair work onlarge tractors used by farmers throughout central Arizona

The first post office was established in 1912, and the first store was built in 1914. The population of El Mirage grew rapidly from its early days, and by 1922 it had reached a peak of around 400 people. However, during World War II El Mirage came under bombing raids from Japan, and as a result the population decreased significantly. In 1945, when Phoenix became an independent city, El Mirage lost its status as a town and became an incorporated village. It has since experienced sporadic growth, reaching a population of around 100 people in 2000.
