Drake of the El Mirage Volunteer Fire Department. At the time, many people believed that fires could be lit with bows and arrows and it was decided to hold an event to test this theory. There were only twelve entrants who participated in the contest which lasted two days.
El Mirage is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 6,291 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name "El Mirage" comes from two words: enigma and mirage. The first word means "a hidden mystery." The second word, which refers to the city's location on the edge of a desert plateau near Phoenix International Airport, creates an incredible view when looking out its window. In 1907, Harry Phillips built a small adobe house on what is now El Mirage Boulevard in El Mirage. He named his home after his brother-in-law's rancho ( Rancho Mirage). In 1912, Hoku Kīnekawa acquired land east of Central Avenue and west of Interstate 10 where he eventually built his own estate called Mesa Verde Pueblo (Mesa Verde). In 1916 Gilbert S touching started construction on White Sands Missile Range which became one of El Mirage's most important industries during World War II. As missiles were being developed at White Sands there was also growth in military aviation with Boeing Airlines starting service to Chandler Airfield in 1940 and then expanding into Tucson before finally opening its hangar at Mesa Verde AFB in 1945. As industry changed so did the demographics of El Mirage as well; annexed by Phoenix in 1960 it lost much of its population but saw continued economic growth thanks to new development around airport acres such as North Scottsdale Road and Camelback Mountain Parkway that replaced downtown businesses closed by either redevelopment or annexation over time including Artis School District #2 which moved into their building adjacent to Sun Devil Stadium until 2003 when they sold their property to Scottsdale Unified School District #1 for use as an all-purpose school campus serving students from both districts together until 2019 when ELmirage Unified School District #2 opened their doors inside Scottsdale Stadium with additional buildings situated along North Scottsdale Road just south of I-10) residential neighborhoods were added between 1958 and 1961 surrounding what was once Glendale Municipal Airport providing access northward only off University Drive while still having easy access southbound off I-10 through South Park Boulevard until 1990 when State Route 89 was routed parallel to University Drive instead making it difficult if not impossible for motorists entering or leaving town limits without going via University Drive only increasing traffic congestion during peak periods making it necessary for most residents today drive east on I-10 past Ocotillo National Monument before turning south onto SR 89 accessible only off SR 89 leading back into townlimits

El Mirage is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,908 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first people to live in El Mirage were Mexicans who came overland from Texas in 1881. They built a ranch and started a flour mill. The town was founded on November 3, 1907 by Wm. Henson and James Jett as an agricultural settlement named for the Mirage hills that backed it up. A post office was established at El Mirage on March 5, 1908, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 6, 1959. In 1917 there were 10 businesses in the town with $5 per day in revenue; by 1929 this had increased to 100 businesses with $50 per day in revenue but only 2 banks (the National Bank of Phoenix and First National Bank of Tucson) had continued to provide banking services into the 1930s- 40s because they could not compete with larger banks which had opened up throughout Arizona after World War I ending hostilities between America and Europe. In 1940-41 there were only 8 businesses with a total valuation of $2 million due largely to prohibition being enforced during that time period across most of America however three new business establishments became active within 3 years- western honeymoon travel agency (1942), air cargo terminal (1943) & golf club (1945). During the 1950s through 1970s El Mirage experienced dwindling population due mainly to migration away from its rural setting towards jobs available within Phoenix or Tucson primarily but also outside ofArizona because of oil production incentives offered by federal government through programs such as GATT which led to growth of Phoenix job opportunities for Mexican nationals during these years as well as increasing numbers coming from other parts of North America including Canada which supportedPhoenix's burgeoning aerospace industry during this time period; however whenPhoenix lost its status as "largest city" following enactment of law creating Metropolitan Region #1 which encompassed all Arizonans regardless of place Of residence beginning in 1987 workforce shortages began becoming apparent especially given decreasing birth rates among Mexican nationals since about1970 due both to social/economic changes wrought by recession combined with increasing STD rates among American males attending college now generally considered Prevalent among Hispanics living alone or cohabiting unmarried partner rather than married partner; agriculture no longer dominates economy despite large inflow into recent past from countries such as Mexico City & Sonora where cheap labor has been sought after for many decades while Uptown areas have seen significant growth particularly downtown Phoenix & Tempe although some residents continue to commute long distances via expressways into those cities etc.. El Mirage is located off HWY 95 south just eastof Tolleson Rd., approximately 12 miles southwestof Apache Junction Roadxto I-10 exit 221A just north o f US Route 66 about 24 miles northwest o f Scottsdale Road about 36 miles southwest o f Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport About 42 miles east o f New York state line El Mirage is adjacentto Mohave Valley National Parkto the westand Tooele River National Forestto the east
