During World War II, the USAAF purchased weapons from Mexican manufacturers and distributed them toAAF units stationed around the world. These weapons were used in combat against Japan during World War II and saw service with distinction both before and after the war ended. Following the end of World War II, gun manufacturing resumed in El Mirage but it would not reach its former level until well into the1970s due to technological advances which made firearm production far more efficient than ever before. El Mirage is a small town in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. El Mirage has been inhabited by Pima and Maricopa Indian tribes for about 350 years. The town was founded in 1907 on the site of an old Spanish mission known as San Gabriel de las Alas (San Gabriel from Alá). A post office called Mesa del Arroyo was established in 1912, but it closed down in 1914. In 1917, a group of ranchers including Hiram Bingham bought 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land east of El Mirage and built Mesa del Arroyo Rancho Park to provide grazing and recreation for their animals. They also developed a dairy and cattle ranch there until they sold it to the Wright brothers in 1927. In 1928, Imperial Airways started flying passengers between Phoenix and Tucson using Route 66; El Mirage became one of its landing points. The airport opened in 1936 when US Airways moved its headquarters from Phoenix to Tucson. The local economy has been based on agriculture since at least the 1920s; however, other industries have come into play over time such as retail services, construction/construction materials manufacturing, healthcare providers/facilities, government contracting and services such as taxi service or truck stop operations. One major employer since 2002 has been Lockheed Martin Corporation which manufactures F-35 Joint Strike Fighters for the United States Air Force; this job growth led to increased development near the airport over time including new housing developments and businesses like Verizon Wireless store which opened up next door to IHOP restaurant nearby during that time period In recent years there have been several expansions & projects taking place at El Mirage Airport: 1) remodeling & expansion of runwayspace with new taxiway & aprons - this project is being done by Lockheed Martin Corporation 2) construction of a Combined Arms Training Range adjacent to runway 18L - this range will be used by both UDF (United States Defense Forces), Marines Corps EOD team members & USAF personnel while training NATO allies 3) addition of two parallel taxiways leading back onto main runway – these were originally built only for demonstration flights but are now standard practice 4) addition of more parking spaces – this project was funded through private donations with hopes that it would lead to more business boating activities along Edwards Channel

The community was founded in 1912 by Territorial citizens and settlers from the Mexican state of Sonora. It grew rapidly during World War I because of the large production of munitions at nearby White Sands Proving Grounds. After the war, industry declined but population growth kept pace, reaching 1,200 by 1925. In 1933, El Mirage incorporated as a city. Growth slowed during World War II as demand for defense materials increased; however, it regained momentum after the war and reached 2,000 by 1960. The economy has since been centered on service industries such as tourism and government services.
