However, by World War II, El Mirage had effectively disappeared as a commercial center due to its strategic location on Route 66. It re-emerged as a modestly sized agricultural community during the postwar period but quickly lost most of its importance as a regional center following the arrival of Interstate 10 in 1951.
El Mirage is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit El Mirage were Father José de Urquiza and Father Miguel Hidalgo on July 14, 1824. They camped near what is now known as the "Naco" River. In 1827, they founded the mission of San Bernardino de los Padres y Santa Catalina del Valle (later Mission San Gabriel Arcángel) in present-day central El Mirage. A year later, they started construction of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel II which was completed in 1830. In 1833–34, Governor Manuel Antonio Peña visited El Mirage and recommended that it be established as a missions town with five churches and schools; it was done so on October 16, 1835 by governor Fernando Frias Pacheco with approval from President Anson Wells Mexico City through his secretary José Joaquín Herreraía Ortiz de Carpio y Aguilar. The original plaza today includes the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe with its associated convent and school buildings built between 1836 and 1840 under direction of Obispo don Vicente García Mora y Rivera; prior to this time much of the civic center had been constructed by Atanasio Lopez during his term as mayor in 1794–1805 when he served concurrently as governor and presidente de la Cámara de Representantes en el Congreso General Mexicano (the first Mexican Congress). In 1860s an agreement was reached for US wagon trains to travel up Little Colorado River Valley from modern-day Phoenix down via Goodyear Mesa until reaching Presidio Valley Junction about 20 miles below present-day Prescott about 400 miles eastward then continuing northwest along Present Road all the way to White Sands Junction where wagons would turn back due to bad water conditions one day out each season before continuing onward another day downriver past present-day Las Cruces before arriving at Yuma March 10th or 11th depending on lunar cycle) crossing over into Mexico onto what is now Uvalde Ranch lands northwest of Tucson while also sharing facilities including water rights with Mexican ranchers who continued grazing their cattle there until land purchases made by US Army General John Smedley Butler brought permanent peace and ended Anglo ranching activities in southern Arizona

The townsite remained an important commercial center until the early 1950s when oil exploration increased traffic along the river caused diversion of resources away from El Mirage, leading to economic decline. In recent years, growth has resumed in El Mirage with development taking place around the junction of I-10 and US-6. This has led to new job opportunities for locals as well as tourism which is now a major source of income for the townspeople.
