El Mirage is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It lies on the north side of Phoenix on State Route 85. The area that became El Mirage was originally inhabited by the Yuma Apache and later by Maricopa Indian tribes. In 1885, United States Army Captain James E. Woolridge granted homestead rights to Elias Howe and his wife Emma Dodge in what is now El Mirage. They named their land "El Mirage" after a small fabled valley in California's Mojave Desert where they had seen mirages for the first time while exploring the region for cattle ranchers. In 1912, Roy Smedley bought 5 acres of land northeast of El Mirage from Jens Meyerhoff and developed it into Smedley Heights subdivision which included houses, a grocery store, church (Anglican), post office, telephone line and other infrastructure. The first home was built in 1915 by Waddell Ferguson who also operated an agricultural garage near present-day Shea Boulevard and Camelback Road/Route 85 interchange on State Route 85 east of town. Ferguson died in 1928 when his car ran off a road near Red Mountain Pass while he was returning from selling hay to farmers west of Phoenix; his widow moved back to her old home with their two children until she sold it in 1951 to John Ronson who added another story to the house before demolishing it in 1969 as part of redevelopment efforts for nearby Scottsdaletown Mall development project known as "The Village". A year later, developer Robert Bowers purchased Ronson's property which became shopping center bearing his name including onestory buildings housing restaurants and movie theaters called "Bowers Plaza." In 1984, American Express company opened its corporate headquarters here followed by Wells Fargo bank operations soon afterwards followed by Chase Manhattan bank operations before being replaced by Bank One since 2001 until its closure in 2013 due to economic problems associated with global financial crisis affecting Arizona communities generally.; At about this time development plans were unveiled for a new light rail station serving downtown Phoenix along with annexation of adjacent parcel making El Mirage into an urban city subject to city laws governing zoning matters rather than traditional county laws governing rural areas such as those that prevailed prior thereto; however no developments ever took place as the recession led Toeppen+Weiner real estate investment group into receivership during 2011-2012 leaving much unused land within city limits unincorporated much like many other underserved rural counties across America during tough times similar to what happened throughout mostringe metropolitan areas throughout North America during these dark days known variously as "the Great Recession" or simply "the Depression". The area that would become El Mirage was first settled by Native Americans in this region in 1861 as part of a larger land grant given to José Francisco Huizar by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. In 1912, after disputes over grazing rights caused a social unrest near Bisbee*, which had an impact on nearby Pima Village*, El Mirage was founded as a result of an agreement between Huizar and John Witherspoon Hughes Sr., one of America's richest men. Hughes donated $10,000 towards its development. In 1957, El Mirage became incorporated as a city with its own government and mayor; it remains under municipal jurisdiction today. The first post office opened here on November 3rd 1887; it closed on May 25th 1991 due to low mail volume (it reopened under new name “Pima City” on July 1st 1995). As early as 1851 there were reports of goldfields around this area*; prospectors discovered more gold than they could sell in their initial discoveries so they returned home or sold their finds off piecemeal until all but two claims were abandoned within three years* (*See: "Gold Fever" - A History of Tucson Herald-Republic)). By 1863 most residents living near Bisbee had moved away because of depletion of supplies from follow-up findings alongmile*. When US Military forces burned down Bisbee during the Gold Rush in 1868 shorty after arrival*, many people who had remained lost their homes too(*See: "Bisbee Burning", Tucson New Times - November 6th 1888). By 1870 only five families remained living at what is now known asHuizar Rancho de los Payasos.* (*See: "Huizar Rancho de los Payasos: Census Data for 1860" - Ancestry Library website)). However several small payments from George Hearn led to full title deed awarded in 1886 (see *"George Hearn & His California Gold Rush Empire", Journal Historical Society Quarterly vol XXIII no 2 (Summer 1985), pp 269-291*) making it possible for Mexican immigrant José Padilla* (* padilla@hotmail) to purchase 4200 acres adjacent to present day Huizar Roadstead from Juan Ortiz Moreno†(*ornevadero@ixsnetcom).
