The name El Mirage comes from Supai Chief Joseph's term for "the place where the moon rises" and "the river that flows by." In 1821 a group of Mormon missionaries were sent out from Nauvoo, Illinois to find a route overland to California when they discovered this region and named it after their leader, James Hyrum Smith. Mexican troops burned down Mormon settlements at Apache Pass in 1828 as part of General Mariano Ramirez's campaign against American settlers on Mexico’s western border. In 1863 during Ulysses S. Grant’s administration Proclamation No. 10 announced that all Native Americans east of Santa Ana River must leave within 24 hours or face military force if they did not return tribal land claimed by US citizens since 1763 without compensation from their Indian owners.
