El Mirage is an agricultural town in Coconino County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,542 at the 2010 census. El Mirage is located on the eastern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is adjacent to Scotts Valley. The first Europeans to visit what is now Coconino County were Spanish missionaries in 1763. They named this area San Isidro because it resembled Mount Saint James in Madrid, Spain. The first permanent settler in what is now Coconino County was Manuel de Salazar who arrived in 1823 from New Mexico. He named his land Rancho San Isidro after St. James' Parish, which he had seen while traveling down the Rio Grande near Santa Fe. A post office called El Mirage was established at this location on November 14, 1903, by Leland Stanford Owen, Jr., father of California Governor Edmund Senter Owen. The name has been changed several times since then – most recently to its current form of El Mirage El Mirage began as a cattle ranch and farming community with around 100 residents during World War II when Phoenix became a war-time bomber city due to its proximity to Los Angeles and other major citiesbombed by Japan. Many Japanese American citizens were forced into labor on military bases throughout the war era; including those at nearby Mesa and Glendale Heights where they worked construction projects for General Electric and other companies that used slave labor during wartime America's "total war". In 1946 the community had grown enough for a school district to be organized with 10 schools; 7 elementary schools (grades K-2), 3 intermediate schools (3-8), and 1 high school (9-12). The merger of these two districts left El Mirage with 12 elementary schools and 2 high schools - one serving students through 8th grade while another serves 9th grade through 12th grade according to 2010 enrollment data released by Coconino County Schools District website . After many years of growth there are only 5 elementary schools serving students grades pre-K thru 6thgrade as well as one middle school open until 8th grade which cannot meet student demand because it does not have any technology available for full time instruction . There are plans underway by county officials to close all but 1 or 2Elementary Schools before 2020 due primarily to budget cuts however no decisions have yet been made about closing middle or high school . There are also plans underway for development within the community that would change much about daily life for many people living here especially if approved will bring more car traffic onto I–10 & US 60 making it difficult or impossible for seniors & parents with young children/children learning single handedly

El Mirage, Arizona was founded in 1907 by P.J. O’Neill and his brothers as a cattle ranch located on the eastern bank of the Colorado River. The land that now makes up El Mirage was acquired from the Apache Chief Cochise in 1912. In 1915, O’Neill married Irene Madden, daughter of businessman and rancher George Madden, and together they began to build what would become one of the most influential businesses in Arizona – Nippon Oil Company. Nippon Oil Company became El Mirage Petroleum Corporation in 1949 when it merged with Texaco Limited. The company became one of the largest oil companies in North America and played an important role in developing Phoenix and Tucson into major metropolitan areas. Today, El Mirage Petroleum Corporation is a subsidiary of ExxonMobil corporation and provides services to both local communities and ExxonMobil's worldwide operations. The town of El Mirage was platted on November 12, 1907 by P.J. O’Neill while he was working for John Wesley Hardin at his Chino Hills Ranch near Wickenburg; it took three years to plat out all the Lots 1-3 within its current boundaries which included present day east Mesa County (and part of west Yuma County). On February 2, 1909 issues were placed upon referendum for approval to name the town after Colonel Harry Steele who had been instrumental in organizing US forces during World War I; however only 60% voted yes! After Steeles death on July 4th, 1909 his widow applied for naming rights but due to lack of nominations she lost out to Mrs Asa Gifford who named her new town Steele City after her late husband instead! Once established as a city within its own right, Steele City quickly gained notoriety as a center for oil production because it furnished more than half the output for Lubbock Texas during WWI thanks largely to its proximity to Midway Field where American planes made their first bombing raids against German targets on April 6th 1918 (Operation Albatross). The town developed around the El Mirage Post Office and general store, which remained until 1941 when it was destroyed by a fire. After the post office reopened, the townspeople began to build their own homes, which were finished in 1951. The population of El Mirage fluctuated for many years before reaching its present size in 1960.
