In 1914-1915 work began on creating a new water supply for the community when local farmers discovered fresh water sources under mesquite trees near their homes south of Interstate 15 adjacent to present day University Avenue/State Route 509 east of I-15 (the roadway now known as State Route 87). The discovery resulted in increased business opportunities for local businesses including meatpacking plants, flour mills and other agriculture businesses that were still operating until well into the 21st century despite being completely surrounded by residential areas developed since then! It wasn't until 1957 that residents started building highways within walking distance of their homes without ever having seen one! As late as 1907 there were still few buildings or businesses in town except for one store owned by Jno Bowers which operated until 1959. In 1912 prominent Pima County leader George Bird Griggs donated land to build Reid Air Force Base near Yuma; however much of what would become Reid AFB was undeveloped until World War II when it became home to Sky Harbor Airport serving Phoenix and Tucson before becoming part of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway International Airport. At its peak during World War II there were more than 4000 military personnel stationed at Reid AFB including fighter pilots such as Joe Hughes and Chuck Yeager who first flew over Phoenix while being trained at Reid AFB
