Douglas, Arizona is a small town in the Mohave Desert region of southeastern Arizona. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of Pahrump Valley and is bordered by Apache National Forest to the north and east, Cochise County to the south, and Navajo Nation to the west. Douglas is one of four communities in Mohave County that together make up Pahrump Valley Regional Airport. Douglas was founded in 1868 as a station on the Chihuahua Trail. It was named for Colonel John Douglas, an officer with cavalry forces who had served in Mexico during Mexican War II. Douglas became a mining town in 1870 when two mines were opened there. The town rapidly developed into a commercial center due to its location near routes leading to Tucson and Phoenix. In 1915, Douglas became home to the first airfield in Mohave County when Pahrump Valley Regional Airport was established there. The airport has since grown into one of eastern Arizona's major airports serving both general aviation and commercial airlines. Today, Douglas is known for its shopping malls, art galleries, museums, golf courses, and several hotels including Radisson Blu Resort & Casino and Regency Grand Hotel & Spa. The city also hosts annual music festivals such as Mesa Music Festivals or Dodge City Folkfest which attract thousands of visitors each year from all over southern Arizona. Douglas, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Douglas has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and is one of five towns in Pinal County that were founded as part of the Caddo Indian Reservation. Douglas was named after General John Douglas who fought against Mexican President Francisco Villa in 1867. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Douglas on December 2, 1875. The original settlers were members of the Mormon Battalion which had traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois to battle Mexican forces during the American Civil War. After arriving in what is now Douglas, these men built a cabin and started a farmstead which would eventually become known as Dawson's Mill. A few weeks later, another group of pioneers also arrived and began building a cabin called Log Cabin Park near where Union Pacific Railroad tracks currently stand today. This permit allowed future settlers to build their homes without fear of being evicted by their landlords or Takoma Creek Indians who lived near the town site at that time. The first school was opened inDouglas on February 7th, 1876 by Mrs. Elizabeth Wickenheiser with six students from Ogden and eight students from Marysville). Classes were held every other day until September 15th when it was announced that Mrs. Wickenheiser would be unable to continue teaching due to health reasons; however, her classes continued until March 14th due to help from three substitutes (one female and two male teachers). In addition to education, early pioneers also skirmished with Apache warriors living nearby along what is now Honeymoon Road (now Red Mesa Road) during raids known as Adobe Walls Huntings which resulted in the capture or kill of several Apache chiefs including Chief Cochise and his brother-in-law Major Osage Wells (who later became President Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of War). One such attack took place on February 26th1876 when approximately fifty Apache warriors attacked a group of white men waiting for supplies at Log Cabin Park; seventeen people were killed including four women and four children while thirty-seven others were wounded including nine soldiers who received medical attention but did not survive the attack. The news spread quickly throughout Douglas so residents armed themselves with spears and rocks before fleeing into hiding; this event is sometimes referred to as "The Attack on Log Cabin Park." After months of preparation led by Captain Charles Bovey (a Mormon scout leader), an ambush occurred on April 6th1876 when about seventy Apache horsemen raided a wagon train traveling down Red Mesa Road; all twenty-six passengers - eighteen men women children - died except for seven soldiers who managed to throw off their saddles and run away before they could be captured alive by the Apaches. In response to thisattack Governor James Buchanan ordered Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s 5th Cavalry Regiment (later renamed 4th Infantry Regiment) under Lieutenant Colonel Frank Leslieto raidApache Canyon north of Phoenix resulting in three deaths including one general officer – John Wesley Hardin – Commanding General Cheyenne Mountain District Headquarters personnel Sergeant First Class Augustus Earle Emmons surrounded Horseshoe Bend where he discovered more than sixty horses belonging mostly Toomatopoeans (soundless creatures) among manycontainer loadsof goods consisting almost entirelyof gold coins minted at Chihuahua Cityby Holbrook &Fenway Ensign George Jones . Douglas was founded in 1864 by James Douglas, a surveyor and landowner who named the town after himself. The town was developed as a mining district and grew rapidly with the discovery of gold in 1868. By 1889, Douglas had become one of the largest towns in Arizona. The city was destroyed by fire in 1911, but quickly rebuilt thanks to local donations and support from the federal government. It became an important industrial center during World War II due to its production of aircraft parts and munitions. In the postwar period, Douglas underwent rapid growth as a suburb of Phoenix. The city reached its peak population in the 1960s and 1970s, but has since been declining steadily due to economic decline and gentrification.
