The first European to visit Douglas was Captain James Cook in 1778 when he sailed along the southern coast of what is now Arizona from Spanish land to Catalina Island. He noted that there were "a great many villages" on both coasts but no large towns or villages on the mainland—the only thing then similar to present-day Douglas was some small islands near Apache Junction (now Phoenix). In 1847, prospectors discovered gold in what became Douglas and began mining operations; by 1854 more than $200,000 had been mined here. By 1861 Douglas had become an incorporated town with a population of 12 people; it grew rapidly during the 1860s due to other mines being established nearby including Tonto National Forest (now Glendale) and White Sands National Monument (now Open Space Preserve), creating new jobs in agriculture and engineering while also attracting workers from Tucson to help develop the town's infrastructure. By 1870 Douglas had a post office, schoolhouse, three churches (one Episcopal), two hotels/motels, four stores/warehouses, twelve acres of agricultural land used for stockraising and five miles long by three miles wide streets with sidewalks; it contained about 20 dwellings with 400 head of livestock including 6500 hogsheads of whiskey! In 1872 newspaper editor Grosvenor Mifflin founded The Daily Citizen which continues publication today as Arizona Weekly Publishing Co., Incorporated since 1907. A year later Mifflin married Annie Cushing who would be instrumental in developing local politics within Pima County; she would serve as president pro tempore from 1893 until her death in 1915 amid significant growth within the county’s political structure over that time period – making her one of only female elected officials at that point in American history! Douglas, Arizona is a town in Douglas County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first people to live in Douglas were prospectors and farmers who began arriving in the early 1860s when gold was discovered near what is now Douglas. The town's name comes from General James McDowell's 1869 army attack on Cochise County’s Fort Yuma. McDowell thought Douglas would be his next target and ordered his soldiers to burn all the homes and crops they could find in the small towns around Yuma before moving on. This didn't stop miners from coming to Douglas however, so by 1880 it had a population of 400 residents and an economy based mostly on agriculture. In 1912, when Jerome Harkness founded Harkness copper mine #2 in nearby Pinal County, he decided to move his company’s operations eastward into what is now Douglas because of good prospects for silver mining there. By 1916 Harkness had opened three mines here – #1 (now known as old Noonday Mine), #3 (the present-day North side mine), and #4 (the present day South side mine). In 1919 he changed his name to Republic Copper Company after becoming one of America's leading producers of aluminum foil with its new plant west of Scottsdale outside Phoenixville where aluminum ore was processed into metal cans and other products then shipped all over the country. After World War II ended most production at Republic stopped but some remained until 1984 when it closed its last plant in Mesa because of competition from Mexican aluminum producers flooding into the U.S.. The post-war years were tough for many small businesses throughout Arizona including Republic Copper Company which closed its two Mesa plants due to competition from Mexican aluminum producers Flooding American Ore Mines With Cheap Labor
