Douglas, Arizona is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 10,105 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Pima County. The first post office in Douglas was established on November 15, 1888. The name of the town was changed to Douglas on December 20th of that year. The first store in the town was established by Wm Halsey and opened on December 12th of 1889. In 1905, A&P Mart was opened in Douglas and remains open to this day as one of the larger grocery stores in central Phoenix. On October 14th 1951, Douglas became an incorporated city with a Mayor/Council system under Arizona Constitution Article XIII §§ 2-3(a) and 9-5-51

Douglas is home to the Douglas Air Force Base and the University of Phoenix-Phoenix campus. The town was named for General James H. Douglas who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as governor of Arizona from 1903 to 1909. The town began as a post office in 1887 and grew rapidly due to its location on a military reservation where goods could be bought and sold without taxation or tariffs. In 1912, Douglas became an incorporated municipality with a population of 2,500 people. By 1920, the population had grown to 7,000 people and it reached its current size of 3,713 in 2000. The nucleus of today's Douglas community came about during World War II when many local businesses were requisitioned by the United States Armed Forces for use in war production. Many local residents enlisted in the armed forces and soon after they came back they started their own businesses providing services that would have been impossible or expensive to provide without government assistance such as trucking services or fabrication capabilities. Today many locals still serve in the military or are veterans dating back to World War II

Douglas was a small town in Arizona until the late 1800s. The first European to explore Douglas was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who explored the area in 1542. It wasn't until 1860 that the townsite of Douglas was platted and named after General Andrew Johnson, who served as the United States Senator from California. The community had its beginning when traders set up shop in the area in 1868. By 1890, there were over 100 residents living in Douglas. In 1901, it became an incorporated municipality with a population of only 350 people. However, by 1910, Douglas had increased to 1,500 residents and by 1920 it reached 3,000 people. In 1941, Douglas joined forces with Payson to become one city under one government and grew even more rapidly during World War II. During the war years,Douglas produced military hardware such as tanks and guns for use by the American military effort. In 1948, Douglas reverted back to its original name of Douglas City after becoming an independent municipality once again due to concerns about growing suburbanization within its boundaries. As time went on however;Douglas' growth slowed down significantly as more new development sprung up around it instead of following suit with its larger sister cityPayson which experienced rapid growth throughout much of the 20th century (and still does today). Today Douglas is all but forgotten outside of its own borders despite being home to a thriving downtown district and rich cultural heritage which has made it an important stop on travel routes throughout central Arizona

The railroad arrived in 1885, and Douglas became a major center of industry and commerce. In 1907, the city hosted the first nationally broadcast radio station, KGMB, which helped create a new era of popular culture in Douglas.Today, Douglas is an important agricultural and rural community with some 2,000 residents. It is also home to several colleges and universities including Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU), and Pima Community College (PCC).
