The company was founded by Captain George Stephenson in 1814. He designed a gunstock that could be folded down to provide leverage for firing the weapon from a seated position. This invention allowed soldiers and sailors to fire cannon from boats without having to remove the weapons from their positions. TheGun Folding Stock Company quickly became successful, and began producing its own guns and stocks in large quantities. By 1820, they had produced over 100,000 firearms. Their products were well-known throughout the United States, and they were especially known for their manufacture of rifles and shotguns. In 1828, Captain Stephenson died suddenly at age 76 after many years of production success. His son, George Stephenson II continued his father's work as president of The Gun Folding Stock Company until his death in 1892. During his tenure as president, The Gun Folding Stock Company became one of the most successful firearms manufacturers in America. In 1907, they sold their assets to Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (Winchester). However, The Gun Folding Stock Company continued to produce firearms into the 1920s under new management until it ceased operations in 1925.

Douglas, Arizona is the most recent city to be created in the county of Pima. The city was founded on February 14, 1907 by ranchers and settlers from northern Douglas County. The first residents were a group of men who came overland from western Arizona. By 1909, the City had a population of around 100 people and it was authorized to issue its own currency, the Douglas Bank Notes. The city experienced some growth during World War I as local businesses produced goods for soldiers and civilians alike. However, after the war ended, Douglas saw a stagnation in its economy that persisted until the late 1920s when new industries began to come online including construction sites for highways and dams. In 1949, Douglas welcomed its first female resident when Mrs. Alice Bowers moved into an apartment within the city limits. During the early 1960s, Douglas experienced another identity crisis as it unsuccessfully tried to become part of either Phoenix or Tucson due to different racial demographics at that time -Douglas was primarily Mexican-American while both Phoenix and Tucson were majority white. By 1969 however, with more integration occurring in both cities through annexation by other municipalities nearby there seemed little reason for duplication so Douglas became an official constituent city within Pima County once again on July 1st that year Since then Douglas has made steady progressene through various economic expansions such as becoming one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in town (2005-2010) with a population increase of 50%. The current mayor is Kathy Wehner who took office on January 1st 2014
