This visit also marked the beginning of what would be an era of growth for Douglas City - both economically as well as physically . In 1961-62 architect Rollin Hill designed one of America's first municipally funded municipal stadiums -the Smith Stadium which played host to many local events like football games between University of Phoenix Cardinals playersand then-Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's squadrons during his sheriff's term (now known as Maricopa County War Memorial Museum).
