Douglas, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Douglas is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was founded in 1885 by Captain John H. Douglas and his family as a trading post on the edge of what is nowDouglas City. The post served as a depot for Stagecoach Lines between Phoenix and Tucson and shipped goods from ferries across the Gila River to Prescott. After World War II Douglas became an agricultural center with farmers growing wheat, corn, cotton and other crops. In the late 1960s and early 1970sDouglas experienced significant growth as a result of Interstate 10 being built through the community. The highway connected Douglas with points east and west of Phoenix, creating new business opportunities for the townspeople. The current incarnation of Douglas began to take shape when developers purchased land near downtown in the late 1990s and began planning its development. The first phase included construction of a doughnut-shaped shopping mall called "The District." Phase two involved building several new schools and apartments in what had been farmland north of downtown; this phase is currently under construction. Development has continued apace since then with plans for even more ambitious projects including an arena for soccer, baseball, basketball and volleyball; an outdoor movie theater; a hotel; and multi-purpose buildings that would serve as offices or shops throughout the city limits
Douglas is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, its population was 1,964. Douglas is located on the eastern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is part of the Tucson–Mesa–Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Douglas were Native American Apache and Cochise Indians who had been living there for centuries before European exploration began. In 1867, when Arizona Territory was organized, Douglas became part of it as well. The town site was laid out by George Waddell around 1868 and named after Ulysses S. Grant's nephew General James HalleckDouglas grew rapidly soon after it became a popular spot for settlers because of its access to water supplies and easy transportation to markets outside of Phoenix. By 1890 it had reached a population of 471 people and by 1925 that number had grown to 2,362 people making it one of the most populous cities in Arizona at that time. In 1924 local developer Harry Chandler purchased land east of downtown Douglas from John Wesley Powell for $2 million dollars which he used to build what would eventually become known as Camelback Mountain Park (today's Chandler Open Space). He also developed Mesa into an agricultural center with small villages dotting his landholdings until he sold them all off in 1951 during his final years as mayor; Mesa then became home toDouglas proper while Chandler Village continued to exist north of I-10 and east along Scottsdale Road (now Shea Boulevard). Today only remnants remain from these settlements including some homes from Chandler Village which stand today among tall trees near Camelback Mountain Park . The growth within Douglas led to increased demand for housing so much so that by 1930 there were already 3 schools and 10 businesses catering specifically towards citizens seeking affordable housing close by while still allowing plenty of room for shopping and recreation options beyond just basic needs like groceries or sheltering during storms or other emergencies. This led directly to development – now known as Midtown – becoming Ohswego Street NE between First Avenue NE & Shea Boulevard becoming home both to industrial warehouses storing items such as auto parts and lumber (now occupied by Sears) alongside more recent upscale developments such as One Scottsdale Plaza which stands today across from Chase Bank - one example being how office buildings formed down each side Main Street NW continuing up on either side into early 21st century days becomingPhoenix’s main commercial districts despite no current services Nestled inside former manufacturing/commercial areas
