Douglas was founded in 1902 by Captain Emory Fenton and his family after they moved from Prescott, Arizona. The name "Douglas" comes from a local trail that led west from nearby Yuma to what is now Douglas County. In 1906, incorporation of the town occurred and it became known as a dry goods store center due to its lack of water resources at that time. By 1920, however, there were also several businesses serving agriculture including a flour mill and two grain elevators which continue to operate today. The original courthouse building was completed in 1903 but it burned down in 1925 while being used as an office building for county officials. A new courthouse was constructed between 1929 and 1930 which still stands today as one of the most notable landmarks in Douglastown despite having been demolished multiple times over its history. The building has been used both as an event hall for various functions such as weddings and other events as well as offices for government agencies since its completion date. In 1951, when Phoenix annexed part of Tempe into itself,Douglas became part of Tempe Township with no legal standing whatsoever until 1959 when it reincorporated into Douglas County under the same name once again without any vote or notification to any residents beforehand!
