It is said that he named his ranch after this girl. The first people to live in Douglas were Spanish missionaries who founded a mission there in 1871. Afterward, many General Storeowners established businesses here and the town grew rapidly with the arrival of railroad freight trains which brought goods and passengers to and from Prescott,Phoenix and other towns on the eastern edge of Pima County. Many industrial plants were built here during World War I including a munitions plant operated by GE Aviation as well as an ammunition factory run by Barnes & Noble until it closed its doors in 1978. In 1940, whenDouglas was designated as part of Boundary Waters National Recreation Area, it had a population of only 219 people but has since grown to over 4,000 residents while remaining self-sufficient through agriculture, cattle raising and forestry products production
