By 1870, there were more than 1,000 people living in Douglas and it had become an important center for mercantile activity with connections to nearby towns such as Flagstaff and Prescott. In 1886, when Hubert Dyer founded Dyer's Mercantile Company on Main Street in downtown Dougleshek (now known as Mapleton), he became one of the early founders of what would become Arizona's largest commercial center west of Mexico City. In 1907–1908, while still located in Douglas proper, Dyer built what would beArizona's first major professional sports arena – University Arena – which served as home court for many local teams including the Phoenix Suns (later renamed Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Aeros) from 1968 until 1996 and then again from 2013 through 2016 before moving into Talking Stick Resort Arena across south Scottsdale Road from ASU Tempe campus.
