Douglas is a city in Arizona, United States. The population was 47,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Douglas was founded in 1867 by wagon train drivers and cowboys as Fort Yuma and became an important trading post on the Sonoran Desert Trail. The city developed primarily because of its location on Pima Indian land and its access to water resources. The first Europeans to visit Douglas were Mexican traders looking for passage to California in 1848. For a period of two years between 1852 and 1854, the town grew rapidly due to the discovery of uranium ore near present-day Prescott by prospectors from Colorado under US Geological Survey auspices. By 1865, Douglas had become self-sufficient with a population of over 100 people operating a small store, hotel, adobe pueblo (later reconstructed as the State Capitol), four saloons, and ten or so homes. In 1870–71 American miners discovered gold at nearby Gila Bend, making Douglas one of the most active mining towns in Arizona during that time period. In 1880–81 Union Pacific Railway wired Douglas with electric lights; this event helped spur development along what would become known as Main Street in downtown Douglas. A new cotton gin was built in 1903 by local entrepreneur Waddell Cobbler to produce cotton bales for shipment out west; later renamed Douglass Mills after Cobbler’s family company. In 1906 Copper Queen Mines Ltd., one of America’s largest copper deposits at that time, opened up within driving distance of downtownDouglas from whence it supplied both local businesses and prospective investors with valuable copper ore for processing into coins and other products until closure in 1966 despite claims by some residents that their village had been directly impacted by copper Mining activity which continued long after control passed from Copper Queen Limited to Phelps Dodge Corporation).
