Douglas, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,674 at the 2010 census. Douglas was named for General George Armstrong Douglas and his wife Martha Ann Elliot. The town developed around the railroad station. In 1887, the Douglas Canal opened and served as a transportation artery linking Phoenix with Tucson and other parts of central Arizona. The canal closed in 1927 andDouglas lost its economic importance. The first people to live in Douglas were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day Douglas Rancho de las Animas. A group of Mormon pioneers from Logan called Fort Apache on nearby Cochise Mountain built an adobe fort in 1849 to protect their new rancho from Apache attack. From here they began to trade goods with the Apaches and build up their own cattle herd which they sold into Indian Territory for goods such as horses, blankets, ammunition, and tools. After Mexican independence from Spain was granted in 1848, American settlers began arrive in what is now Pinal County by way of route 66 across the Baja California Peninsula to escape Mexico’s tyrannical rule over its citizens After several years of exploration by three men: frontiersman John Wesley Powell (1858-1937), mining engineer Don Manuel Martinez (1860-1940), and stagecoach driver James Wolk (1863-1941) on July 6th 1863 when they discovered gold right where Douglas Creek flows into Umpqua River they founded an independent city thereabouts name after them Ouray but soon changed it to Prescott because that’s where Gadsden Liverences intersected with Umpqua Road leading thenceforth into Oregon Territory then down south past Prescott creekouputto Gold Rush era towns like Tombstone sure started coming up too so all those places had Names before anything even happened here
