This event is considered one of the most significant moments in Arizona history because it helped create national political boundaries and began establishment of white land ownership throughout much of present-day Mexico and Central America.– (Arizona Historical Society) In 1912, Cottonwood became part of Pima County when it was organized from portions of Maricopa County and Yuma County. At this time, Pima County included all but six miles eastwardof Tucson along today’s U S -Mexico border.– (Arizona Historical Society)
The Cottonwood County seat was first established in 1867. The county was named for the cottonwood tree, which is found throughout the area.
