Cottonwood is a small town in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Cottonwood is located on the eastern edge of the Coconino National Forest. The first permanent settler in Cottonwood was Wm. Humpalay in 1887. The present town site was platted by Gershom Mott in 1912 and named after Cottonwood Creek which flows through it from east to west. A post office called Cottonwood existed from 1912 to 1915; it was moved to Scottsdale and discontinued operations there in 1916. The name Cottonwood may be derived from either of two sources: 1) cottonwoods that were plentiful near the original townsite, or 2) an Indian word meaning "hollow" or "deep creek." In any case, the townspeople adopted this latter name because of its resemblance to other nearby communities with similar names such as Black Rock and White Sands (both also Apache County towns). According to one source, when Judge Edwin Ladd arrived in Apache County in 1907 he noticed that many people living around Black Rock had lost their homes due to fire damage sustained during Yuma's devastating 1906 earthquake; he therefore decided that a new community should be founded where all those affected could locate together and seek redress for their losses. Thus, Judge Ladd donated 160 acres (65 ha) of land at Cottonwood Creek junction for this purpose. This initial donation formed what would become known as the Ladd Ranch: today's Old Town Cottonwood proper occupies much of that ranchland including most of its original buildings dating back to 1914-1916 when it was included within Scottsdale city limits despite being outside Phoenix' boundaries at that time! A post office called Redskin Gulch served both Reddskin Creek Junction and Cottonwood from 1916-1920; however, due primarily to population growth within Scottsdale instead of increased mail demand from elsewhere within Arizona – as might have been expected based onECDSA regulations then – Reddskin Gulch metamorphosed into simply Scottsdale Post Office #4 upon its opening day (November 25th), 1920! As documented variously by author Don Saylor & others over time (& various other sources), even though USPS ZIP code 85037 currently encompasses much more acreage than did 90230 back then (!), Scottsdale still retains a proprietary "Post Office 4" mailing designation locally unique unto itself! Consequently, residents thereof are technically still "cottonwoods" even if they live insidemodernScottsdalepostoffice!! 😀😂👍🏼

In 1920 the City of Cottonwood merged with the towns of Chino Hills and Fountain Hills to form the new city of Phoenix. However, within a few years most of these towns had also merged into Phoenix too. Finally on January 1st 1932 Arizona statehood was granted to Cottonwood becoming an unincorporated community once again governed by local officials only. The last resident departed in 1984 and all that remains today are some old buildings used as housing units and a few small trees
